Choosing between PTE and IELTS can feel overwhelming. Both are widely accepted, but they differ in important ways.

Scoring System

IELTS uses a 0-9 band scale. PTE uses a 10-90 point scale. Both map to CEFR levels, but PTE's granular scoring means small improvements are visible.

Test Format

IELTS Speaking is face-to-face with a human examiner. PTE Speaking is recorded and scored by AI. If you're nervous around people, PTE might suit you better.

Results Speed

PTE results are available within 48 hours. IELTS takes 13 days. If you're on a tight deadline, PTE wins.

Acceptance

Both are accepted by most universities and immigration bodies. Australia and New Zealand favor PTE slightly. The UK traditionally prefers IELTS (especially UKVI).

Our Recommendation

  • Choose IELTS if: you prefer human interaction, need it for UK immigration, or have strong writing skills
  • Choose PTE if: you want faster results, prefer computer-based testing, or are stronger in speaking/listening
